Cape Coral voters elected four new council members on Tuesday, three political newcomers and one former council vet.
We congratulate the winners, mayor-elect Marni Lin Sawicki and council members elect James "Jim" Burch, Richard Leon and Rick Williams.
Given the number of crucial issues facing the city, they have their work cut out for them, and we wish them every success as they begin their terms following their swearing in on Nov. 18.
We also thank our outgoing mayor and council members, John L. Sullivan, Chris Chulakes-Leetz and Kevin M. McGrail, as well as Marty McClain, who opted not to seek a second term.
The past four years have been tough ones and, while we may have stood on opposite sides of the issues from time to time, your service to the city is appreciated.
We would venture a guess that our hopes for the next couple of years reflect those of the voters this election cycle:
That the next four years be productive ones for the city of Cape Coral, which, we firmly believe, is moving out of the depths of recession back into economic normalcy;
- That the newly reconfigured board exhibit professionalism in its deliberations and discussions of the issues as they come to the table;
- That decisions be knowledge-based and reflective of the needs of the community;
- That public input be not only welcome, but embraced.
We see positive things ahead for the city of Cape Coral.
May this board show the leadership - and determination needed - to get us there.
