Baker bounced from volleyball tourney

Serving and attack errors cost Ida Baker dearly in Tuesday's District 6A-11 volleyball tournament semifinals. The Bulldogs were unable to mount any kind of challenge in a straight-set loss at Port Charlotte 25-5, 25-14, 25-18.

Ashley Vargas and Kristina Kayatta led the Bulldogs offensively, delivering five kills apiece with Vargas also credited with five digs.

Port Charlotte (16-10) clinched its first state playoff berth in 13 years by eliminating the Bulldogs (15-9). The Pirates advance to the district championship match Thursday at Venice.

District 4A-11: Lauren Sheeley powered her way for 17 kills Tuesday night to lead Bishop Verot past Gateway Charter 25-11, 25-12, 25-6 in the semifinal round of the district tournament at LaBelle.

Ashlyn Brown contributed 15 kills to go with 21 assists with Teya Leonard adding 15 assists of her own.

Verot (19-6) advances to Thursday's championship game at LaBelle against the winner between LaBelle and Oasis.

District 5A-12: Mariner and Golden Gate advanced in the district tournament first round Monday night.

Mariner downed Cape Coral in straight sets 25-23, 25-22, 25-19 to advance to the semifinal round Tuesday night against Lely at Lely

Golden Gate eliminated Immokalee 25-11, 17-25, 25-15, 25-17 to advance to Tuesday's semifinals against Cypress Lake at Lely.

The Tritons were eliminated in Tuesday's semifinal round by host Lely 25-4, 25-4, 25-9.
