Commission candidates need to make their case to the voters

October 11, 2013
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

As a Republican candidate for Lee County's Board of County Commissioners, and a voter, I want to share the sentiment of my letter to Gov. Scott regarding selection of a replacement for recently resigned Commissioner Hall.

The voters and businesses of our county certainly deserve their voice to be loud and clear in their election of a permanent Commissioner to serve their needs and heal these wounds to their trust. I have seen the news that many competitors for this seat have written, apparently asking for the appointment. I contend this idea, by requesting a gross advantage in the actual election, is a disservice to the voters as they choose a candidate to represent their needs with integrity.

I believe it is my job, and my fellow candidates' job, to make our case to the voters over the coming year, rather than to put the Governor in a position misaligned with the intended function of our government of the people, by the people, for the people.

For what it's worth, I encourage him to make a selection that advances common-sense conservatism and economic growth. An agreement that this individual will not run for the seat will ensure the voters' free choice in the election, and demonstrate the practical leadership Florida needs.
