It's still early, but the Island Coast Gators are in the driver's seat in District 5A-14.?The Gators rode a strong defense and Trey Boyd to a 34-14 win over Cape Coral Friday night at Island Coast.?

The Gators defense picked off four passes by Cape QB Dylan Bontrager, returning one for a touchdown, and held Cape running back Eamon Smart to 21 yards on 14 carries. Boyd, meanwhile, ran for 218 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown.?

"We're very proud of the way our defense performed tonight," Gators coach Joe Bowen said. "They kept us in there, gave us great opportunities for our offense to score."?

Bontrager, in his first game back at quarterback for Cape after missing time with a concussion, was intercepted four times. Joey Lantz returned one of the picks for a touchdown.?

"You could see a lack of practice" in Bontrager's play, Seahawks coach Larry Gary said. "From the short time he's practiced he seems kind of out of tune. And losing the structure of our offensive line we lost our starting center we had problems with our center."?

Bontrager had to contend with several low snaps from center.?

"It was like a bowling ball," Gary said. "We know that Eamon's a heck of a ball player. And Bontrager, coming back this week, we knew that he would give them a different wrinkle to their offense. Cape has done a great job this year putting up points, so we were concerned about Bontrager coming back and with Eamon having a heck of a season as well."

Gary said the Seahawks tried to control Boyd the way Island Coast stopped Smart.?"The first half they broke a couple of big plays," Gary said. "We gave up the big plays and then we couldn't stop the third downs. We didn't make plays on offense, and the other team capitalized."?

The Gators (5-1) improved to 3-0 in 5A-14, putting Island Coast out front in the race for a playoff berth.?

Cape (5-2, 2-1) slips behind Dunbar (3-2- 2-0) in the district standings. ?Both Island Coast and Cape play Dunbar later this season.?

"We feel now that we are in control of our own destiny," Bowen said. "It was like a roller coaster. In the second half, we didn't stop the big plays, the third downs. We didn't win the third downs. And the thing about it, we had chances. We had chances."?

Island Coast quarterback Quinn Borque ran for one touchdown and threw for another.?Bowen said Boyd and Borque are "steadily improving each week. Hopefully they can keep on improving."?

Tyler Carver's sack of Bontrager set up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Borque to Teddy Mitchell with eight seconds before halftime.?

Island Coast also stopped an early Cape drive, dropping Smart for a loss on fourth-and-1 at the Gators 23.?Cape's defense had big plays as well. The Seahawks recovered a fumble on the Island Coast 35. Two plays later Bontrager threw a 1-yard TD pass to Smart. ?

C.J. Lewis caught seven passes for 105 yards for Cape, including a 35-yarder to set up Smart's 1-yard scoring catch.?

Earlier Colin Loethen's sack thwarted an Island Coast drive that had reached Cape's 20. Loethen had a pair of sacks on the night.?

The Seahawks recovered four Island Coast fumbles.?

A special-teams penalty set up Borque's 5-yard touchdown run. On fourth-and-one the Seahawks were called for offside, giving Island Coast a first down in Cape territory.?Cape's special teams contributed points, however. Rasheen Bailey recovered a bad snap on a Gators punt in the end zone for a Seahawks touchdown.?"We've just got to pick it up, win the rest," Gary said. "This was a big one."
