The Ida Baker Bulldogs are halfway to a perfect season.?Baker (5-0) rolled past Estero 60-10 on Friday in a non-district game.?
Johnny Garrow had four rushing touchdowns and Roy Denson caught a touchdown pass and returned a punt 54 yards for another Bulldogs score.?
It's the second week in a row that Estero (2-3) ran into a buzz saw. The Wildcats were coming off a 69-0 loss to Naples.?
Baker's up-tempo offense was nearly unstoppable Friday, usually ready for the next play before the officials were. The Bulldogs had 17 first downs, 167 yards rushing and 147 yards passing in the first two periods. Baker finished the night with 344 yards on the ground.?
"We've been pretty balanced all season as far as rushing and passing the ball," Baker coach Brian Conn said. "I felt like it was no different tonight."?Sage Attwood had touchdown passes of 5 yards to Tyler Iverson and 30 yards to Denson. Garrow had TD runs of 3 and 5 yards and Alex Febles ran it in from 6 yards out.?
Estero got on the scoreboard with 58 seconds left in the first half on Marshall Wilson's 30-yard field goal, but Baker answered on Filander Barahona's 28-yarder at the buzzer for a 36-3 Bulldogs lead.?
In Baker's previous two games, the Bulldogs put up 30 or more points in the first half, but slowed in the second. Against Riverdale last week, Baker had to hold off a late Raiders rally to win 33-28.?
That game "was a little too much for me," Conn said. "I was a little worried. "Sometimes you need that during the year to not get complacent. If you want to be district champ you can't be complacent."?
This time there was no slowing down the Bulldogs. In the second half Denson's punt return was followed by a 32-yard Barahona field goal, Attwood's 15-yard run and a pair of 3-yard Garrow TD runs.?
"We talked about how if we want to be one of the top teams in this area, like a Naples or a South Fort Myers, you have to go out there with a mindset to dominate and not let up in the second half," Conn said. "This was as close as we've gotten."?
Adrian Amendiola scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter for Estero.?
"They're a good football team," Estero coach Mark Jackson said. "I didn't like how we played in the first half. I thought we played better in the second half although the scoreboard didn't show it."?
As Conn noted, all five of the Bulldogs' wins so far have been non-district games. District 6A-12 play kicks in next Friday at Lehigh.?
"District next week, so the five goes away and it's the first one that matters," Conn said. "Our guys are focused on being district champs and it starts with game one next week."
