The Cape Coral Rowing Club earned a silver medal in the Men's Club C 4+ and bronze medals in the Men's Club C 8+ (+ indicates boats utilizing a coxswain) and the Mixed Club C 8+ at the USRowing Masters National Championships held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota Aug. 15-18.
The Men's Club C 4+ included Julio Sanchez, Bruno Stieger, Juan Rivero and Facundo Barrera, coxed by Spencer LeBlanc. The Men's Club C 8+ rowers were Joe Guttieri, Walt Buch, Jim Gunter, Jeff Elkins, Jon Hart, Shawn May, Justin Nunn and Karl Awiszus, coxed by Dana Buntin. The Mixed Club C 8+ rowers were Kerry Elkins, Laura Simion, Tracey Cercie, Justin Nunn, Jon Hart, Liz Donley, Karl Awiszus and Shawn May, coxed by Kelly Gunter.
Club member and scholastic coach Julio Sanchez earned a gold medal in the Mixed B Double with Karen Weigandt Sabatino from Sarasota County Rowing Club. Sanchez and Cape club member Juan Rivero joined rowers from other clubs in the Mixed C 8+ for a silver medal. Sanchez also won three additional medals with rowers from other clubs: Mixed B 4+ (silver), Men's B Pair (bronze), Mixed Double (silver).
Members Betsy Buch and Susanne Mann-Sweeney also won gold medals with rowers from other clubs in the Women's G 8+. Walt Buch won a bronze medal in the Mixed F 8+ and a silver in Mixed D 8+ with Masters Coaching that took silver.
The Cape Coral Rowing Club sent more than two dozen rowers and coxswains to participate in the event. This was the first year the club has participated at nationals. The event hosted rowers from the U.S. and Canada.
