The Ida Baker Bulldogs look like the kings of Cape Coral football this year.

Baker (3-0) defeated Cape Coral High 49-32 Friday night, two weeks after defeating another crosstown rival Island Coast. It is the first loss for the Seahawks (2-1).

Bulldogs quarterback Sage Attwood accounted for six touchdowns, four rushing and two passing. The senior ran for 116 yards and passed for 224.

"They just beat our butts," Seahawks coach Larry Gary said. "They're a good football team. They were the better team. Every time we came back they found a way to score."

It was anybody's game in the first half, with Baker holding a 36-32 advantage. The second half was a 13-0 Bulldogs shutout.

"That's not the score or the amount of yards I expected from both sides going in," Bulldogs coach Brian Conn said. "Both defenses, on film, were very stout. That first half, it seemed like big plays for them and we were moving with a good tempo."

"We played very poorly on defense tonight," Gary said. "There's no other way to say it."

Eamon Smart ran for 102 yards for the Seahawks, scoring two touchdowns. He also caught a TD pass.

The first half alone had enough thrills for all four quarters. The big plays came early and often.

On Cape's first play Dylan Bontrager lateraled to Austin Cole, who hit Justin Parmeley for 68 yards. Eamon Smart scored from seven yards out on the next play.

That awakened the Bulldogs.

Baker came roaring back with a 33-yard Attwood touchdown pass to Geordan Hoagwood, followed by a 16-yard Attwood run set up by Wyatt Griffith's punt return to the Seahawks' 20.

The Bulldogs made it 16-7 on a safety when Seahawks punter Mateo Perez stepped out of the end zone. It became 22-7 as the second quarter began. Attwood ran it in from nine yards out.

Just when it started to look like the game was getting out of control, Smart raced 80 yards to get the Seahawks back into the hunt. Then it was tied. The Seahawks recovered a muffed Baker punt attempt on the Bulldogs' 12. On fourth down, Bontrager ran eight yards for the touchdown. Bontrager then hit Keashawn McCoy for a two-point conversion to make it 22-22.

Bontrager's 65-yard pass to C.J. Lewis got Cape inside the Baker 10 on the Seahawks' next possession. Roy Denson broke up a potential touchdown pass and Perez kicked a 27-yard field goal for a 25-22 Cape Coral lead.

Then it was the Bulldogs' turn. Baker roared right back with an 18-yard Attwood run and an 18-yard Attwood pass to Trayon Clarke.

Bontrager hit Smart with a 10-yard TD with 10 seconds before halftime as Cape cut Baker's lead to 36-32. The score was set up by 20- and 50-yard McCoy receptions.

Bontrager was knocked out of the game early in the fourth quarter. Gary said Bontrager was taken to the hospital for examination. Eliot Pierce played quarterback after Bontrager's injury.

Alex Febles picked up the majority of his 102 rushing yards in the second half as Baker decided to slow things down and take more time off the clock.

"Once we got to the fourth quarter we felt like we could run a little bit more clock. Sage had a heck of a game," Conn said. "But once we got up, our defense was tired, we had given up a heck of a lot of yards in the first half. So we tried to slow it down a little bit."

Attwood scored on a four-yard run and Filander Barahona made field goals of 34 and 31 yards to account for the second-half scoring.

"It looked like everybody was a little bit tired in the second half," Conn said.

The Bulldogs open District 6A-12 play next Friday when Riverdale comes calling for Baker's homecoming game. Cape Coral also begins district competition, facing Cypress Lake at home in a District 5A-14 contest.
