To the editor:
Lee County residents should be very alarmed about the imminent grounding of half of Lee Tran's buses after 6 p.m. every day. This severe cut in service has stayed below the radar, with virtually no newspaper coverage.
The mantra of government since the Great Recession began has been jobs-jobs-jobs - but many people cannot reach their jobs without reliable and timely bus service. These cuts will damage the viability of Lee County's entire bus system, with patrons who must transfer affected the most.
These cuts will hurt employers and employees alike. Not everyone has the luxury of their own car, or finishing their work day by 6 p.m.
A sad irony is the loss of leverage; every dollar Lee County saves by cutting bus service means that a matching dollar from the state of Florida will be sent to some other community.
These buses will be grounded in November unless the County Commissioners direct otherwise. The final budget hearing will be held at the downtown courthouse on Sept. 18 at 5:05.
