Robert J. Speirs, 90, of Cape Coral, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at his home. He was born April 18, 1923, in Quincy, Mass., to Arthur and Edith Mosher Speirs. He graduated from North Quincy High School in 1942. As World War II raged, he worked at Fore River Shipyard for several months, but then joined the Army, serving as a gunner and then tank commander with the 711th TK BN of the 7th DIV, in the Asiatic-Pacific area. Upon discharge in 1946, he attended Suffolk University, Boston, Mass., earning a degree in pre-legal studies. He then went on to law school in Boston. He left after two years to join the claims department of American Policyholders Insurance Co. of Boston, a subsidiary of American Mutual Liability. After five years, he left to join the claims department of the fast expanding Allstate Insurance Co., working claims in Massachusetts and Vermont. He moved from adjuster to district claims manager, retiring in 1983. In 1985 he moved to Cape Coral.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Thomas) McIver of Carver, Mass., and Dawn (Lee) Burt of Bunn Level, N.C.; sons, Gary (Ellie) Speirs of Jackson, N.H., and Robert Scott Speirs of North Conway, N.H.; five grandchildren; and former wife, Eve Adams-Speirs, of Bunn Level, N.C.
He was predeceased by a sister, Grace; and two brothers, Edward and Walter, Walter having died as an infant of SIDS.
