Seahawks smother Jaguars 45-14

Cape Coral used a dominating offense and tenacious defense to smother East Lee County 45-14 Friday night.

As is true of most football games, the team with the stronger lines usually is victorious. The Seahawks were the more experienced on the offensive and defensive line, and took advantage of that throughout the game. They used a balanced attack to keep the Jaguars on their toes, and to keep the ball moving.

Defensively, the Seahawks were running after East Lee quarterback Winfred Ward all over the backfield. The Jaguars were rarely successful in penetrating the defense with their rushes. Often, Ward was scrambling to get away from the Seahawk rush.

By the third quarter the Seahawks were up 31-0. The Cape Coral coaches began to substitute freely. It was then the Jaguars put together scores on consecutive drives to pull with 31-14. Both scores were thrown by Ward. When the game got that close, Seahawks coach Larry Gary reinserted his first string, and they came back to score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Offensively, Cape Coral used a balanced attack to overcome the Jaguars. Senior running back Eamon Smart ran for four touchdowns, and quarterback Dylan Bontrager threw for three as the Seahawks amassed 408 yards of total offense. Bontrager threw for 261 of those yards.

The game was delayed in the second quarter because of lightning in the area, and was also bogged down with penalties. The teams combined for 26 penalties for the game. East Lee was flagged 15 times for 136 yards. Their total offensive output for the evening was 138 yards, so they almost negated that with their penalties.

Gary was pleased with his team's performance overall, "They played hard," he said. "Penalties, we've got to do something to address the issue of penalties."

This is Bontrager's first year as a starter.

"He knew this summer he was going to be the guy," said Gary, "and so he said to the team, 'hey guys, we have to make this happen.'"

"He's making better reads because of more experience." Gary added.
