To the editor:
This weekend, firefighters from our own Cape Coral Fire Department will be on the corners of many intersections in our city holding out the "boot." The department will be accepting donations from you, Cape residents, to help support the work of the Muscular Dystrophy Association(MDA) in our area.
Recently, I had firsthand experience with MDA as a volunteer counselor at their summer camp program. A weeklong "experience of a lifetime" for all that attend. Children from our area are able to get away from home and experience new challenges. There is swimming, fishing, derby racing, and cardboard parades, to just name a few things that the kids participate in. Campers are able to just be a kid and have fun with their peers. The hardest day is the day kids leave camp, because it is at that moment they are farthest away from next year's summer camp.
This weekend, I ask that when you stop at one of these intersections that we show our support to the MDA and give something to help, if you are able to do so.
I also ask that you thank the men and woman that are out on the streets helping raise donations. The MDA summer camp program is a life-changing week for all the kids who go and all the volunteers who participate. The donations go a long way and allow for the participation of so many.
