To the editor:
The weekend of Labor Day is a traditional time for many Americans. It's a time to reflect on the summer days we have enjoyed. It's a time to celebrate the working American. Some will celebrate by having picnics at the shore or parks, and often times our own backyards. It's a wonderful weekend.
For families of the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) it's a weekend of time-honored tradition. Our annual "telethon," the Show of Strength airs this weekend. All the funding raised helps people who have been diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease. The MDA sends children to summer camps, provides clinic appointments at the local MDA Clinic, repairs and modifications to durable medical equipment, support groups, pays for flu shots and we offer hope and help to thousands of your neighbors who are fighting back against muscle disease.
More importantly, the contributions help towards the fight by funding research to find a cure and a cause for muscle diseases. Tune into the Show of Strength this year to learn just how far the MDA has come in making strides to fight back.
I mentioned this is a time honored traditional weekend for our MDA Families. We are fortunate to have the support of another organization, the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters). Fire Fighters are rich with tradition and we are pleased to also share this weekend with Fire Fighters across the United States, who will take to the streets. They will be asking you to FILL THE BOOT. The IAFF 2424 right here in Cape Coral will be participating this weekend. Our heroes will stand out at local intersections in our city, and ask you to fill their boot. This funding is essential to bring hope to our MDA Families. Also, every dollar raised will stay local right here in Southwest Florida. As the SWFL MDA District office's Health Care Services coordinator, I know first-hand how important the fundraising is to help our families. I get up in the morning to come serve, and without the funding, we can't help send our children to summer camp, we can't provide research to find a cure, we wouldn't have clinic appointments to help people, or provide support groups. We can't provide all that we do without your help. But when you support our firefighters this weekend, or watch the telethon viewing, you CAN make a difference.
Thank you so much to all of our supporters, and especially the men and women of the Cape Coral Fire Union 2424. You are helping us to fight back against muscle disease. I know one day we will have the cure for ALS or any of the other 43 neuromuscular diseases , and we hope you will join us in our fight, ONE TEAM, ONE DREAM.
