Thomas Emory Garten Sr., 62, a Lee County resident for over 20 years, formerly of Vicksburg, Miss., and Charleston, S.C., passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 in Cape Coral. He was born July 9, 1951, in Camden, S.C., to Lewis and Frances Garten, now deceased.
He attended the North Fort Myers Church of the Nazarene and was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam War veteran. He was a member of the Georgia Air National Guard 165th Tactical Air lift unit. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education. He was a very decorated insurance salesman and last but not least he earned his master's degree in criminal justice.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 17 years, Betty Kay Garten of North Fort Myers; one son, Thomas E. Garten Jr. of Evansville, Ind.; four step-children, Tonya (Robert) Blair of Elyria, Ohio, Gracie (Michael) Nallon of Cape Coral, Rebecca Aguirre of North Fort Myers and Sam (Candice) Wilson, also of Cape Coral; a sister, Linda Garten of North Fort Myers; nine grandchildren, Angela, Emory, Timothy, Aaron, Emily, Devin, Michael, Anthony and Cadence; as well as one great-granddaughter, Madison.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, at the North Fort Myers Church of the Nazarene, 6781 Bayshore Road, North Ft. Myers, with Pastor Van Garner officiating. Private committal services will be held at a later date at Sarasota National Cemetery.
