The Cape Coral Seahawks certainly looked explosive Friday night.

Cape had a 28-point second quarter on the way to a 42-24 victory in a preseason classic football game against Riverdale at Dave Warkentin Field.

The Seahawks showed a flair for the big play, with touchdowns of 75, 74 and 40 yards and a 50-yard run and 45-yard pass completion to boot.

Cape Coral senior Eamon Smart drags a Riverdale tackler for a few extra yards during the Seahawks' 41-24 win.

"Once we got the offense going and the defense going we're not bad," Cape coach Larry Gary said.

Cape quarterbacks Dylan Bontrager and Eliot Pierce combined for four touchdown passes. Bontrager played the first 2 1/2 quarters before giving way to Pierce.

The Seahawks spotted Riverdale a 10-0 lead, then erupted for 35 first-half points. Bontrager, a junior, connected on touchdown passes of 74 yards to Miguel Repress, 15 yards to Rhasheed Jiles and 40 yards to Keashawn McCoy. Bontrager had 175 yards passing in the first half and 208 overall.

Pierce threw a short pass to Rasheen Bailey, who broke free for 75 yards for a fourth-quarter TD.

Senior running back Eamon Smart ran in a score from four yards out and senior James Zamor scooped up a fumbled snap on a Riverdale punt attempt and scored a 20-yard touchdown.

Smart finished with 107 yards on 14 carries.

"We've still got some kinks we've got to iron out," Gary said. "The penalties - too many of those - and we gave up one or two big plays. And turnovers. We've got to take care of that stuff."

Riverdale jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Brian Abrams' 37-yard field goal and Jesse Lighthall's 13-yard TD pass to Malcolm Smith.

Van Edwards ran eight yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and Lighthall ran it in from two yards out in the game's final moments.

"They played it all the way out," Riverdale coach Rob Hinson said of the Raiders. "They didn't give up. I can't say how many penalties we had, how many times we shot ourselves in the foot."

The Raiders were crippled by penalties in the first half, flagged 14 times for 100 yards. The total penalty yardage hit 155 for Riverdale by game's end.

"We've just got to learn from our mistakes," Hinson said. "I think if we clean up our mistakes we'll be fine."

Zamor had another big play on defense when his hit on Lighthall led to a Repress interception. Angel Torres forced a fumble that Hakeem Thomas recovered for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks had some problems hanging onto the ball on punt returns. In all they had six fumbles, losing three.

The action begins for real next Friday when the Seahawks travel to East Lee County and the Raiders play at South Fort Myers.

"This was a warm-up," Gary said. "We had a couple of bumps and bruises. We've got to take care of those and go from there."
