Things to look for in a VPK program

To the editor:

When looking for a quality child care center with an effective VPK program here are a few things every parent should look for.

Make sure the center has a copy of the "Standards for four year olds." This will have the standards and benchmarks your child will need to learn for kindergarten.

The center should administer the Florida VPK assessment three times a year and you should be given a print out of the results. The assessment will chart your childs development over the year.

The student to teacher ratio for VPK is 1 to 11 without an aide. With an aide you can have 20 students. Take a tour of the center and use all your senses, Is it visually appealing, does it smell nice, are they hands on with the children, is there positive teacher child verbal exchanges and interactions? Do your homework and find the perfect fit for you and your child. Their educational foundation begins with a quality preschool.
