Assuage Spa opens in Fort Myers

Southwest Florida International Airport July traffic tops 465,000

During July, 467,946 passengers traveled through Southwest Florida International Airport, an increase of 0.7 percent compared to July 2012. Year-to-date, passenger traffic is up 5.9 percent from the same period last year.

The traffic leader in July was Delta with 108,265 passengers traveling to and from Fort Myers. Rounding out the top five airlines were AirTran (82,391), JetBlue (62,012), US Airways (51,856) and Southwest (40,092).

Southwest Florida International Airport had 5,081 aircraft movements (takeoffs and landings), a decrease of 0.3 percent compared to July 2012. Page Field saw 5,500 movements, a 12.2 percent decrease from July 2012. In addition, more than 2.3 million pounds of air freight moved through Southwest Florida International Airport in July 2013, a decrease of 1.4 percent compared to July 2012.

Attorney elected to board

The law firm of Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A., has announced that Attorney Christina O'Brien has been elected to the Family Resource Center of Southwest Florida's Board of Directors (the "Center"). The Center is the only court-approved facility in Lee County that works in conjunction with the Children's Advocacy Center to provide supervision services, education and training to Southwest Florida families who are required to have monitored family time.

O'Brien concentrates her family law practice in matters of dissolution of marriage (divorce), custody, paternity, child support, domestic violence injunctions, post-judgment modifications and dependency issues. Lee County Port Authority earns award

Facility Maintenance Decisions magazine has honored the Lee County Port Authority, operator of Southwest Florida International Airport, with a Financial Management Award in its 2013 Achievement Awards. The award program acknowledges successful and efficient projects accomplished by maintenance, engineering and grounds care departments in institutional and commercial facilities throughout the United States.

LCPA was one of eight companies selected for this year's awards and was recognized for greatly reducing energy costs at Southwest Florida International Airport. Since moving into RSW's new terminal in September 2005, the maintenance team has aggressively worked to minimize maintenance costs, improve efficiencies and reduce energy consumption on its Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning and lighting systems. These innovative efforts have cut energy usage for the terminal chillers from 8,792,200 KWHs in 2006-07 to 5,590,800 KWHs in 2011-12. In addition, the overall electric costs for all facilities at Southwest Florida International Airport have been reduced by 33 percent.

Hope HealthCare Services recently was awarded a $5,000 grant from BJ's Charitable Foundation to support the Hope Connections program.

Hope Connections provides in-home care for elderly adults in Hendry and Glades counties, providing nutritious meals and assistance with a variety of needs including chores, companionship, safety reviews and transportation. Funds from BJ's Charitable Foundation will help purchase food for Hope Connections patients.

The deadline for owners of small businesses to submit applications for the 19th Annual Southwest Florida Blue Chip Community Business Award is Monday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m.

BB&T-Oswald Trippe and Company and BB&T Bank coordinate and sponsor the program to recognize successful small businesses and share their stories of how they overcame adversity as a way to teach and inspire other entrepreneurs.

The award, presented to a single Southwest Florida business each year, recognizes that company's innovative methods of overcoming hardship. Previous award winners relied on ingenuity, stamina, dedication and hard work to meet challenges, vault financial hurdles, medical issues and overcome adversity.
