Donald D. Callies Sr., 85, of Hendersonville, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013. He was born April 17, 1928 in Leigh, Neb., resided in Denver for 35 years before moving to Henderson County in 1995. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel L. and Edith Callies and his sister, Yvonne Schieferle.
Mr. Callies was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force and was employed by Martin Marietta for 35 years as an aeronautical engineer. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was a member of Elks Lodge #1188 in Robinson, Ill., and American Legion Hendersonville Post #77.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved nature, fishing and hunting. The beauty of the landscape surrounding their home allowed him many days throughout the years to enjoy caring for his feathered friends.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 55 years, Maryann Horky Callies; daughter, Dianne (Walter) LaGrange-Dircks of Cape Coral; son, Donald (Nicki) Callies Jr. of Hendersonville; grandchildren, Paul and Brett LaGrange and Sydney, Jacob and Tyler Levitt; great-grandchildren, Nicole K. and Richard J. LaGrange; brothers-in-law, Raymond (Marge) Horky and Gene (Lori) Horky; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of the Resurrection was held Tuesday, August 13, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family received friends, Monday, Aug. 12, at Shuler Funeral Home.
