To the editor:
When I hear the words integrity, honesty, sincerity, professionalism and ability my thoughts immediately turn to Mayor John Sullivan.
The main issues facing Cape Coral are bad timing for the utilities project, new assessments, indiscriminate spending, tax increases, lack of commercial development, slow going with providing permits and inspections, and lack of job creation. On every issue Mayor Sullivan has been "right on the mark."
Unfortunately, however, the Mayor has been saddled with a council that has displayed a more than disturbing lack of compassion and an absolute absence of professional caring for citizen welfare. (Thus the infamous 6 -2 vote on virtually every issue)
The thoughtless 6 -2 vote serves to tie the Mayor's hands and continues to plunge the city into a state of heartless disrepair. It would be important to consider that every time the Council winds up with a 6 - 2 decision, with the six always being the same people, we have five individuals following the lead of one Council member who is doing the thinking for the "gang."
This is not good governance and surely a detriment to the Cape's forward movement.
Yes, we need changes but not in the Mayor's position! Mayor Sullivan has kept his promises. He has fought for business owners. He has battled for a better climate for new business development.
He has supported the veterans organizations. He has contested any new taxes. He has advocated for Realtors, builders, seniors, and fraternal organizations. And, he has demonstrated his support for Cape citizens who are struggling financially and need our help during these tough times.
The Mayor, without question, is a leader and with our help he will be overwhelmingly reelected and provided with new council members who understand that this must be a city of the people, by the people, and for the people - if we are to move forward towards prosperity for all.
