Larry Herman Smith, 60, a Cape Coral resident for the last nine years, formerly of Long Beach, N.Y., and a U.S. Army veteran, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, in Cape Coral. He was born June 8, 1952, in Hempstead, N.Y., to Otis and Alcenia Smith, now deceased.
After serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, he returned home to Long Island where he worked as a mechanic for the Long Island Rail Road for 25 years before retiring to Florida with his wife. He was a passionate man. He loved to cook, especially barbecue. He loved to dance and to entertain friends and family. He was always the life of the party. He loved, and was loved dearly. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Smith is survived by his beloved wife of 12 years, Donna A. Smith of Cape Coral; seven children, Tonya Smith, Jessica (Tristan) Bangora, Jillian (Jack) Murphy, Kevin "KJ" (Megan) Murphy, April Wright, Christopher Aurigemma, and Larry Wright; two sisters, Bonnie (Jeffrey) Moore and Janie Smith; six brothers, Otis Smith Jr., Gregg (Carlotta) Smith, William "Beaver" (Heidi) Smith, Jeff (Kris) Smith, Chuckie Smith and David (Mary) Smith; eight grandchildren, Amina, Sonny, T.J., Ryan, Mclayne, Romeo, Sophia and Maverick, as well as two on the way; in addition to many, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kasheica Smith.
Memorial services including military honors were held Saturday, June 1, at Mullins Memorial, 1056 N.E. 7th Terrace, Cape Coral, with the Rev. Denise Sawyer officiating. The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home.
