JUPITER - The Fort Myers Miracle churned out 18 hits in a 13-4 drubbing of the Palm Beach Cardinals Saturday night.
The Miracle sent nine to the plate in the second inning and scored four runs on five hits off Cardinals starter Tyler Melling. Kennys Vargas singled led off with a single through the right side and then trotted home on Angel Morales' majestic two-run homer. On a 3-2 pitch, Morales hammered a fastball from Melling to break the scoreless tie and give the Miracle a 2-0 lead.
Andy Leer delivered a second homer of the inning taking a 2-0 pitch from Melling over the left field fence. Aderling Mejia then earned a walk, Jhon Goncalves singled and Eddie Rosario pushed the lead to 4-0 with a base hit into right. The single extended Rosario's hitting streak to seven games.
The Fort Myers offense four runs for a second time in the top of the fifth. Rosario started the inning with a triple and scored on Miguel Sano's single through the left side. After Vargas picked up his second hit of the game, Morales and Jairo Rodriguez registered back-to-back sacrifice flies.
Morales and Rodriguez added RBI hits in a two-run sixth inning to push the lead to 10-2. Morales finished 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. The Miracle scored in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Vargas finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI, Rosario was 3-for-5 with a triple at two runs batted in and Leer reached base four times going 2-for-4 with two walks.
Tom Stuifbergen started for the Miracle and went six innings and gave up three runs including a homer to David Popkins in the sixth. Stuifbergen (2-3) struck out three and had no walks. Melling (1-2) lasted just 4.2 innings and gave up seven runs on 10 hits.
The Miracle (39-15) wrap up the series with the Cardinals (21-32) Sunday afternoon at 5:05 p.m.
