JUPITER - The Palm Beach Cardinals knocked off the Fort Myers Miracle 4-1 Friday night.
The Miracle scored the first and their only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Aderling Mejia led off with a single through the right side and was moved to second when Stephen Wickens walked. An Eddie Rosario fly out allowed Mejia to advance to third and then Miguel Sano picked up his 42nd RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Cardinals starter Juan Bautista allowed just four base runners in the next five innings. Bautista, 19, finished with a no decision after six innings of in a one-run, three-hit performance.
Palm Beach drew even in the bottom of the sixth when Stephen Piscotty singled through the left side with runners on the corners and two outs off Miracle starter Matt Summers. Piscotty's RBI hit chased Summers from the game after 5 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals took the lead on a one-out RBI single from Jesus Montero in the seventh off Jose Gonzalez (0-1). Leading 2-1, Palm Beach added two runs in the ninth off reliever Corey Williams. David Popkins completed a 4-for-4 evening with a two-run, two-out single up the middle.
Ronnie Shaban recorded the final three outs in the ninth for his sixth save. Danny Miranda (2-0) pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings.
The first-place Miracle (38-15) return to Roger Dean Stadium for game two of the series with the Cardinals (21-31) at 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
