Cape Spirits earns top awards

Cape Coral's rum distillery Cape Spirits took home the top award in its category in the American Distilling Institute's taste-testing event in Denver, April 2. The distiller's Wicked Dolphin Artisan Rum won the silver medal in the Best White/Silver Rum Category in the 7th annual judging of artisan American spirits. One-hundred-forty distillers submitted 317 spirits for the blind taste-testing event.

Wicked Dolphin is distilled in Cape Coral using Florida-resourced ingredients.

A leader of women in American craft distilling, Cape Spirits owner JoAnn Elardo was a featured speaker during the institute's conference on the women in distilling panel where she shared wisdom on branding spirits.

Created with Florida-only ingredients, today Wicked Dolphin is available only in Florida.

Cape Spirits Inc. is located at 131 S.W. 3rd Place, Cape Coral. The brainchild of Cape Coral resident JoAnn Elardo, Cape Spirits has been producing Wicked Dolphin Artisan Rum since summer 2012. Born from a need to create a fine Florida product, this white rum is made completely from pure Florida ingredients molasses, sugar, water, yeast and aged oak barrels. In the future, amber and aged rums will be distilled as well. In addition to rum, Cape Spirits will offer products made with rum, including chocolates, barbecue sauce, rum sauce and rum cakes. Future plans also include an offering of other spirits, including a vodka made from Florida sugar cane. For more information call Cape Spirits at 239-242-5244.

"Feeding our Communities" is a component of Fifth Third Day (May 3), an annual event when the bank celebrates its heritage by giving back to the community. The bank's South Florida affiliate's partnership with The Salvation Army serves to address the effects of critical issues plaguing the state: hunger and homelessness. This is the fourth year that this effort will benefit The Salvation Army and its partner food banks.

Special Equestrians offers therapeutic horseback riding classes and equine assisted activities to help children and adults with disabilities in Lee, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades Counties. Therapeutic riding is designed to improve both mental and physical abilities.
