James (Jimmie) Henry Givens

James (Jimmie) Henry Givens, 72, a Lee County resident since 1958, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in Cape Coral after a long fight with cancer. He was born Nov. 27, 1940, in Daytona Beach, Fla., to Webster and Margaret Givens, now deceased.

He was raised in Stamford, Conn., and was a snowbird during childhood. Upon graduation from high school, he permanently relocated to Lee County. In 1962, he started his career as a marine mechanic and electrician for DESCO Marine Inc., building various size shrimp boats. In 1970, he switched career paths and learned the electrical trade working as an electrician for Lee Brothers Electric. During this time he was a teacher for Lee County Vocational School for the Electrical Journeyman program. In 1984, he started his own business and opened Royal Palm Electric Inc. In 2000, he became an electrical building inspector for the city of Cape Coral where he worked until he retired in 2008.

In his retirement, he purchased acreage in LaBelle, Fla., and started an apiary for honey production.

His hobbies included cruising the Bahamas and Florida on his sailboat. In 2001, he earned his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying his airplane to numerous Florida airports and to the Bahamas. He enjoyed lobster diving in the Keys and he especially loved to do projects. During his life he built two airplanes, a shrimp boat, several sailboats and various powerboats.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 28 years, Nancy Givens; four children, Jan Newby and her husband Nik Simon of Lehigh Acres, Jenna (Paul) Clark, also of Lehigh Acres, Jill (Richard) Rosenquist of Cape Coral and Jimmy Givens, also of Cape Coral; one step-sister, Nancy Kotosky of Stamford, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Jaye Dahlke, Kevin and Alexis Rosenquist, Jami and Carlos Najarro, Juliann and Darmarcus Wilson; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three half sisters, Cathy O'Neill, Jane Manning, and Mona Lewis; a step-brother, Russell Liebfarth; and a step-sister, Jean Freitag.

A private memorial service will be held.
