Special to the Breeze , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

FGCU senior softball player Mariah Fernandez of Cape Coral became the school's first softball player to receive the Carl McAloose Spirit Award.

The former standout at North Fort Myers High School already owns several Eagles softball top 10 career statistic categories with six games remaining in the season before A-Sun Conference playoffs.

The Spirit Award is named in honor of FGCU's first athletics director and is presented yearly to the senior male and female athletes who best exemplify Carl McAloose's spirit and love for Eagles athletics as well as dedication to their team.

Richie Erath (baseball) and Eddie Murray (basketball) were cowinners of the men's award.
