Baseball districts up for grabs

"Anyone can win" the District 6A-13 and District 5A-13 baseball tournament titles being contested next week, according to a poll of the coaches involved.

In 6A-13, Island Coast nicked Ida Baker twice during the regular season, but they could meet again in the championship game next Friday at South Fort Myers, the tournament host.

"We have to win a game before we think about them," said Bob Vandeventer, coach of the No. 2 seeded Bulldogs. "Island Coast has to win a game, too."

The tournament starts Tuesday at South with (5) Riverdale meeting (4) Fort Myers. The winner advances to the semifinals Wednesday against the top-seeded Gators. Baker plays (3) South in the other semifinal Wednesday.

"We have to play well and score some runs, and I'm confident we can win some games," said Vandeventer.

"The season now is of least importance if we don't hit the baseball" said Gators coach Clint Montgomery. "It's not about being the No. 1 or No. 5 seed. Riverdale, South, Baker and us, we all could win it."

In 5A-13, Cypress Lake, Cape Coral and Mariner are the 1-2-3 seeds, respectively.

(3) Mariner and (2) Cape split their season series, each winning on their own diamond. They meet Wednesday in the semifinal round at Mariner.

The championship game in both districts is 7 p.m. next Friday.
