Ida Baker's undefeated boys' tennis team ran into a buzz saw Tuesday as Fort Myers handed the Bulldogs their first defeat 6-1.
"Fort Myers is just a really deep team and they get everything back over the net," said Bulldogs coach Karlene Hampton. "They are very consistent. We kept it close, but Fort Myers was able to hit the money ball."
The Green Wave's volleys kept the ball in play making it difficult for the Bulldogs to mount any kind of charge.
Ida Baker sophomore Brandt Williamson smashes a backband return during his match at Fort Myers High School Tuesday afternoon. More photos are available online at: cu.cape-coral-daily-breeze.com.
"Our boys did a good job," said Hampton. "They went out, did their job, had fun and showed sportsmanship. Now they know what they have to do when we meet them again at districts."
Conditions were not perfect, but Hampton did not use that as an excuse. There was a misty rain off and on, a few wet spots behind the baseline and it was kind of windy at times.
Brandt Williamson, who plays in the singles No. 3 slot, earned the Bulldogs their only match victory of the day. he beat Corey Roberts 3-6, 6-2 and 10-5 in the tiebreaker. All the other singles players suffered through a tough day.
"Brandt managed to figure out his opponent and stuck with him," said Hampton. "He did not let the Fort Myers mystique get to him."
The Bulldogs take an 8-1 season record into their next match on Friday against Cypress Lake at Rutenberg Park.
