A driver who was involved in a traffic crash Thursday has died as a result of the injuries he sustained, according to officials.
At about 1:41 p.m., Cape Coral police responded to a crash at the intersection of Pondella Road and Old Pondella Road. A 2005 Dodge Magnum was traveling eastbound on Old Pondella and approaching the intersection at Pondella Road. At the same time, a 2006 Harley Davidson Road King was traveling northbound on Pondella in the inside lane.
The driver of the Dodge, Phyllis A. Ritenour, 80, attempted to turn north onto Pondella and pulled in front of the motorcycle, according to police. The driver of the motorcycle, Carl R. Hoffman, 64, could not avoid the Dodge and struck the car on the rear passenger side.
Ritenour and a passenger, Norman R. Ritenour, 83, sustained no injuries.
Hoffman, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.
On scene, Hoffman was conscious and alert prior to being transported, according to police.
At 8:47 p.m. Sunday, Hoffman died at the hospital due to his injuries.
It was unknown Tuesday if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
Hoffman's death marks the 10th traffic fatality in the Cape this year, according to officials. He would be the 11th traffic fatality, however, a previous traffic homicide was ruled a death due to medical causes rather than being attributable to the crash.
