Donna Johnson departed this life peacefully in her Cape Coral homeThursday, March 7, 2013, leaving behind her loving husband of 43 years, retired pilot Art Johnson. She moved to Lee County in 1970 from Pittsburgh and continued her education at Edison and USF while working in real estate.
She taught at Suncoast Middle School from 1978 through 1989 followed by consulting work for Jostens Learning Corporation and IBM, introducing Florida and Virgin Island school teachers to the use of computers in the classroom. Following Suncoast, she planned for the Peace Corps, but the Virgin Island aspect of JLC appealed to her travel lust (she traveled the world during her summers). For the past 20 years, she worked part-time for the city of Cape Coral, first at the Eco Park and then at the Rotary Park Environmental Center.
She became an expert in the field of native plants and natural landscaping as well as paleontology and geology (traveling the state and country to search) and was a member of the Fossil Clubs of Lee and Charlotte County.
She fought a valiant battle with cancer for the past five years, finally succumbing to a metastatic tumor inside her brain.
She is survived by her mother, Dee Spangler of Cape Coral, and her sister, Darlene Carrillo of Fort Myers.
Caring home support was provided by Hope Hospice. A private memorial service will be attended by her friends and family at a later date.
