JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Paced by solid rounds from freshmen Edward Figueroa and Jake Sher-win, the FGCU men's golf team wrapped up play at the Sea Best Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University held on the legendary PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass in a tie for 13th place.
Figueroa's even-par 72 was one of just nine rounds at even-par or lower turned in by the field of 75 on the final day, while Sherwin also posted his tournament-low with a one-over 73. Despite the solid rounds from the freshmen duo, the Eagles were unable to move out of 13th place with a three-round score of 319-307-307/933.
No. 26 Tennessee (300-279(-9)-300/879) took home the team title by four strokes, edging out No. 36 Texas A&M (289-296-298/883). No. 46 Coastal Carolina (307-289-302/898), East Carolina (307-289-302/898) and Winthrop (297-303-301/901) rounded out the top five.
Sherwin's 77-77-73/227 scorecard was good enough to tie for 22nd overall, as he led the team with 10 birdies and played the course's par 5s at four-under. Like the other Eagles, Figueroa started his round on No. 10 and closed with a two-under 34 on the front nine and birdied all four par 5s en route to his 72. He moved up 19 spots on the final day to finish in a tie for 25th place (77-79-72(E)/228).
Junior Mathias Boes-mans fired his second straight 78 to close the tournament with an 82-78-78/238. Junior Matt Cote was the team's low-man in Monday's second round with a one-over 73 as he turned in a counting score in all four rounds.
FGCU will be back in action from March 4-6 when it takes part in the three-day Harmony Pre-serve Intercollegiate hosted by VCU in Orlando, Fla.
