Mariner soccer coach Martin Cardenas much preferred to play a full 80 minutes Monday to prepare for the District 3A-11 tournament semifinals, but his Tritons only got half that.
Austin Turner, Isaiah Romano and Glen Garron each scored multiple goals to lead the Tritons to an 8-0 victory over North Fort Myers before halftime of their first-round district playoff match Monday at Island Coast.
"I wanted us to play 80 minutes, but we dod not get to do it," said Cardenas. "If we can stay focused against South Fort Myers I think we will be okay."
South Fort Myers is the Tritons' next opponent at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. South eliminated tournament host Island Coast Monday while Cypress Lake edged Lemon Bay.
Turner led the Tritons with three goals in the first 20 minutes. Romano and Garron each added two goals and Erick Rivera tacked on a single goal. Goalkeeper Alex Trujillo did not have a save in the shutout win.
Cypress Lake, the No. 5 seed, takes on top-seeded Cape Coral at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the first of two semifinal matches at Island Coast. No. 3 Mariner and No. 2 South meet in the later game.
Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the semifinals were moved to Thursday because of the girls' soccer regional matches on Wednesday.
