Proposed hand gun laws

January 19, 2013
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

On Wednesday, Jan. 16, President Obama announced his new sweeping gun laws. Many of us realize that this is just a knee-jerk reaction to the school shooting in Connecticut which left 26 dead, including 20 children.

I think all us regret this horrible act of one person, but we don't want our decision to adversely affect the rest of our approximate 300,000 people in the U.S. We also do not want to be responsible for trampling on our sacred Constitution.

In 2011, a small arms survey showed that there were 270,000 guns owned in the United States. That would translate to 89 guns for every 100 people. Today the ATF has a 438,000-square-foot building in Washington. It has nearly $300,000 in extras for the new director's suite, including a $65,000 conference table and more than $100,000 for hardwood floors.

The administration requested $1.163 billion for the ATF. That includes $1.115 billion in salaries. Wednesday the president was suggesting that congress spend an additional $4 billion to keep an additional 15,000 police on the streets.

The president wants to ban armor-piercing bullets. We all know that for years, many criminals have worn and have access to flack jackets. Now who will that hurt, the average law-abiding citizen?

Obama is proposing that Congress allocate $50 million for schools to help them hire more resource officers. In addition to all this, Lee County wants to place a police officer in every school.

How much more can we stand?

Let's each one of us take a few minutes and contact our congressional representatives and ask them to oppose as much of this is possible!
