District 3A-11 top seed Mariner drove into the girls' soccer tournament finals with a 5-0 semifinal triumph Wednesday night over Cape Coral at Tony McKenna Field.
The Tritons (13-3-4) play for the district title against No. 2 seed North Fort Myers, which disposed of South Fort Myers 3-0 in Wednesday's other semifinal match, at 7 p.m. Friday. The Tritons are seeking their second consecutive district championship.
Alejandra Muro-Solis and Holly Fritz led the Tritons Wednesday night. Muro-Solis scored two goals and assisted on two others. Holly Fritz had one goal and three assists while sister Megan Fritz and Sam Webb-Martin each added one goal.
Goalkeepers Sam Wolfe and Alexis Restrepo shared duty in the net with four saves apiece.
"We played a solid game," said Tritons coach Jefferson Swift. "We were missing a starting defender, but the other girls stepped it up."
The Tritons won the regular season district meeting with the then-undefeated Red Knights 1-0.
"It will be another epic battle," Swift said of Friday's rematch. "We are two evenly matched teams and I expect a tight battle just like the first game."
No matter the outcome of Friday's title match, as a district finalist the Tritons are assured of playing in next week's Class 3A regional quarterfinals.
North Fort Myers 3, South Fort Myers 0: Two goals scored in the first 20 minutes by the Red Knights (16-3-1) effectively sealed their semifinal victory and assured them of playing in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals next Wednesday.
Melinda Lukas added two goals to raise her school record total to 103 while Darian Leschewski added one goal and one assist. Casey Gentile contributed two assists and goalkeeper Amy Pavy made four saves to preserve the Knights' 12th shutout win of the season.
"South beefed up their defense in the second half and it was hard to penetrate," said Knights coach Donna Agostinelli. "We got to play everybody and save some for Friday night."
As far as Friday night is concerned, expect a close battle since the Knights' first loss of the season was by a 1-0 count at Mariner in their regular district encounter.
