To the editor:
Collier County has announced that on Feb. 28, the traffic light cameras will be coming down. Collier County has ended a 10-year contract and much controversy. They claim that the only function of the traffic light cameras was to monitor traffic and improve the flow. However there was 40,000 citations given out during this period even though Florida law prohibits the use of cameras to enforce speed violations or any other law.
One of the local news agencies did an investigation regarding the number of accidents at these traffic lights and found that the cameras had in no way reduced them. The cameras were debated in Lee County and I, for one, am thankful that we avoided another money-wasting endeavor for 10 years.
