Lead slips away as Tritons fall 57-51

Mariner went scoreless over the final four minutes and lost to North Port 57-51 Saturday night.

The Tritons led 51-47 at the four-minute mark, but failed to score down the stretch as North Port launched its comeback bid.

"That's the hardest thing for a young team, is to close out games," said Tritons coach James Harris. " We have to get better at closing out games."

Rick Moore topped the Tritons offensively with 17 points and six rebounds while Mario Blissett added 11 points and six rebounds.

Justyn Miller led the Bobcats with 13 points, who outscored the Tritons 12-4 in the final eight minutes.

The Tritons (5-4) play at Island Coast Tuesday night.

Bishop Verot 57, Kissimmee Osceola 49: Mitchell Fundingsland struck for a game-high 27 points and Mason Taylor added 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Bishop Verot to victory Saturday in the Hoops for Heart Shootout in Orlando.

The Vikings (5-1) led at each quarter break to secure the win. they host Cape Coral Wednesday night.

St. John Neumann 75, Oasis 34: Neumann overpowered Oasis Saturday in Naples.

Chris Carpenter scored 12 points to lead the Sharks (2-5), who suffered their second lopsided defeat in two nights. They lost to Moore Haven Friday 60-46.

The Sharks play at Canterbury Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

St. John Neumann 70, Oasis 32: Mary Stucko led a trio of double-figure scorers Saturday as St. John Neumann overwhelmed Oasis.

Stucko finished with a game-high 19 points, Flannery Wickham added 12 and Sidney Shrader 11 for the Celtics.

Jordan Westendorf topped Sharks scorers with eight points with Allie Fornal adding seven and Samantha Wood six. Tatiana Bruno pulled down 10 rebounds.
