Baker boys blank Palmetto Ridge 3-0

Ida Baker's defense countered a speed advantage by Palmetto Ridge and pulled out a 3-0 victory in District 4A-12 boys' soccer Thursday night.

"Our keeper was not tested much," said Bulldogs coach Scott Wills. "Our keeper and defense played really well against their speed."

Winston Marin scored the only goal the Bulldogs (5-4-1, 2-2-1 district) would need in the first half. Oscar Trujillo and Harris Muhic added second-half goals to insure the victory. Filander Barahona and Landon Day were credited with assists.

Baker plays another district match Friday night at Fort Myers.

Mariner 1, North Port 1: Lucas Orellana's goal in the first five minutes of the second half put Mariner in front, but the Tritons had to settle for a tie at North Port Thursday night.

A second goal by the Tritons was disallowed on a foul, then North Port tied the game in the final 15 minutes on a breakaway.

Alex Trujillo made four saves for the Tritons (6-3-4), who travel to North Fort Myers Friday night.

Girls Soccer

Mariner 11, Dunbar 0: Dunbar was no match for Mariner Thursday night, a mercy-rule shutout at halftime.

Holly Fritz led the Tritons (7-2-3) with four goals and three assists. Alejandra Muro-Solis chipped in with two goals while Megan Fritz, Tori Slidden, Hannah Theriault, Heather Gillions and Yasmeen Saenz each added one goal.

There were no keeper saves. The Tritons host unbeaten North Fort Myers Friday night.

Ida Baker 8, Palmetto Ridge 0: Ida Baker struck for six goals in the first half en route to a mercy-rule district shutout win at Palmetto Ridge Thursday night.

Monique Elliott led the Bulldogs (14-0-1, 4-0-1 district) with four goals. Gabby Hallnan, Shannon Pearl, Franny Farella and Marcela Montoya each added one goal.

Amber Hutchinson filled in at goalkeeper and made one save.

The Bulldogs host Fort Myers District 4A-12 rival Fort Myers Friday night.

Boys Basketball

Bishop Verot 84, Gateway Charter 56: Mason Taylor and Ricky Doyle combined for 40 points to power Bishop Verot past District 4A-11 rival Gateway Charter Thursday night.

Taylor led the Vikings (4-1, 2-0 district) with a game-high 24 points and Doyle contributed 16. Mitchell Fundingsland added 15 points.

The Vikings rode a solid first half in which they opened a 47-25 advantage and pulled away from there.

The Vikings play at Kissimmee Osceola Saturday.

Girls Basketball

Ida Baker 64, Mariner 42: A trio of double-figure scorers carried ida Baker to victory Thursday night over city Rival Mariner.

Hannah Del Negro pumped in a game-high 20 points. Jessie Placher added 18 points and Ali Nicloy 11. Nicloy also contributed 14 rebounds and five assists to the win. Del Negro also had six rebounds and three assists.

The Bulldogs (6-3) host Island Coast Friday night.
