Late goal lifts Tritons 1-0

As time wound down in a scoreless game against Naples, the Mariner Tritons needed a miracle.

With about 35 seconds left in regulation time, the Tritons were in scoring distance. Taking two corner kicks in the remaining seconds, Steven Schwab converted for the game-winning goal with about 10 seconds left to lift the Tritons to a 1-0 victory Wednesday night.

"Our goalkeeper (Alex Trujillo) came up bug with some saves (five overall)," said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas. "He stopped a breakaway scoring attempt to preserve the tie at the time."

Justin Kuchle, Jomar Restrepo and Isaias Velazquez, played outstanding defense for the Tritons (6-2-2), who play a district match at South Fort Myers Friday night.

Boys Basketball

Bishop Verot 71, Barron Collier 53: Bishop Verot grabbed an early lead and maintained control throughout in Wednesday night's triumph at Barron Collier.

Ricky Doyle and Mason Taylor combined for 50 points to lead the Vikings. Doyle connected for 27 points and 10 rebounds while Taylor added 23 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists.

The Vikings (2-1) play at LaBelle Thursday.

Ida Baker 78, Cypress Lake 40: Seth Woods connected for a game-high 34 points to propel Ida Baker to its first victory of the season Wednesday night against Cypress Lake.

"We had a few things to prove," said Bulldogs coach Jay Sanderson. "We had to prove to ourselves that we could score."

The proof came in the opening eight minutes when the Bulldogs raced to a 31-17 lead and dominated the rest of the way.

A 26-9 run in the second quarter put the Bulldogs in front by an insurmountable 57-26.

Preston Grimm and Nate Evans added 11 points apiece for the Bulldogs (1-4), who play at East Lee County Friday night.

Girls Soccer

Ida Baker 11, Cypress Lake 1: Seven different players scored goals Wednesday night to propel Ida Baker to victory over Cypress Lake.

Freshman Syniah Clark led the Bulldogs with three goals while seniors Monique Elliott and Shannon Pearl contributed two goals apiece. Alexsys Vargas, Sarah Johnson, Franny Farella and Gabby Morales added one goal apiece.

A penalty kick that Bulldogs goalkeeper Eden Golden got a hand on was the only goal for the Panthers.

The Bulldogs (11-0-1) play at Fort Myers Friday night.

Girls Basketball

Ida Baker 72, Cypress Lake 47: Three players scored in double figures, led by Hannah DelNegro with 24 to lead Ida Baker to victory Wednesday night at Cypress Lake.

Jessie Placher added 16 points and nine assists while Brittney Benvie had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ali Nicloy contributed seven points and seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs (4-2) host East Lee County Friday night.
