Size matters on the basketball court. Port Charlotte has it and Island Coast does not.

Despite a dazzling shooting display in the first quarter, the Island Coast Gators could not sustain it throughout and lost Monday night to a much taller Port Charlotte squad 70-52.

"They demolished us on the boards," said Gators coach Greg Coleman. "They are so big, two guys 6-6 and 6-7."

Angel Inchausti sparked the Gators with 13 of his game-high 25 points coming in the first quarter. Kaleb Darrett connected for all 10 of his points in the opening period as the Gators led 24-18 at the break.

The Pirates outscored the Gators 17-3 in the second quarter to take command. They continued to open the gap in the third period with a 27-9 advantage to lead 62-36 entering the final period.

"The second quarter killed us," said Coleman. "We came out on fire, but they wore us down. We got open shots after that, but couldn't get shots to fall."

Nicksen Blanc led the Pirates (2-0) with 24 points and Kyle Collins added 13.

The Gators (3-1) host Charlotte at noon Tuesday before the school student body.
