Gators rally past Eagles 69-57

After a sluggish start, the Island Coast Gators hit their stride and handed Naples a 69-57 defeat Saturday night in the final round of the Turkey Shootout at Island Coast.

The Gators got 20 points from Angel Inchausti, including a pair of three-point baskets, en route to their third victory in three games this season.

"We were very lethargic to start," said Gators coach Greg Coleman. "I think it was from sitting around all day. They were here at 7:30 this morning for a walk-through and I think some of them never went home. I don't know if it was nerves or whatever when we scored just eight points in the first quarter. We made physical mistakes, like missing layups. That happens when you don't have much time to prepare for an opponent."

The Gators erased that 14-8 first-quarter deficit with a 24-9 run in the second period. They outscored Naples each of the last three quarters and outrebounded the Eagles overall to record the win. The Gators grabbed 20 offensive rebounds.

"It took us one quarter to get used to Naples," said Coleman. "We hustled big time and with all the new faces we have improved each and every game."

Jordan Lugo added 17 points to the cause and Caleb Darrett chipped in with 14 points, giving the Gators three double-figure scorers.

Inchausti handed out six assists while Darrett and Sonel Mathuron each pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Gators (3-0) host Port Charlotte Monday night.
