Tritons roll to 1st district win

Mariner used a strong second quarter to build an insurmountable lead and defeated Cypress Lake 44-14 at Tony McKenna Field Friday night.

The Tritons (3-6, 1-4 district) overcame an early miscue, put their offense in full gear, and scored on four consecutive possessions in the second quarter.

They were led by quarterback Joey Lantz, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third during that stretch.

During a crucial 1 1/2-minute period the Tritons scored 16 points. First, it was a safety as the Panthers snapped the ball out of the back of the end zone on an attempted punt. On the ensuing kickoff, Mariner's Miguel Barreto returned the ball 50 yards to the Panther 11. The next play Eric Russaw ran it in for a touchdown.

Cypress Lake (0-10, 0-5) went three-and-out.

Again Mariner had a good punt return, this time a 25-yard return by Jaylen Mitchell put the ball at the Panther 35. On the next play, Lantz hit Clarence Williams with a beautiful pass in the left corner of the end zone for the third score.

"Joey (Lantz) made a great throw," said Mariner coach Chris Siner. "We're not really a deep passing team. We're usually more of a sprint out, so it was great to score that way. Williams is not normally our wide receiver. He's our best cornerback, so this was special to have him score."

That score put the Tritons up 30-7 at half, and the Panthers never recovered.

It was Mariner's first win after six consecutive losses. The Tritons started out 2-0, but struggled through the middle section of the season.

"In four of those six losses we were in the game during the fourth quarter," Siner said. "We just have to learn how to finish well."

Lantz added a second rushing touchdown in the second half. He ended up 5-of-16 passing for 79 yards, one interception and the two TDs.

Russaw led the Tritons in rushing with 136 yards on 20 carries with one TD.

"Our young guys are starting to mature," said Siner. "It's good for us to have a win like this after our tough schedule."

Cypress finished its season last night while Mariner hosts Ida Baker in their season finale next Friday.
