BURLINGTON, Iowa - The FGCU men's golf team wrapped up its opening tournament of the fall season on Tuesday, finishing in 14th place at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge hosted by Iowa at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

The Eagles concluded the three-day event with a team score of 308 to finish with a scorecard of 306-300-308/914. The 15-team field featured 13 teams ranked in the June 2012 GolfWeek Top 100 and six that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Missouri led the 15-team field from start to finish, taking home the team title with three straight under-par rounds of 286(-2)-286(-2)/285(-3)/857(-7). Wake Forrest (865) made a big push on day two with a seven-under 281, but finished eight strokes back in second place. Tulsa (867), Iowa (877) and Ball State (878) rounded out the top five.

Freshman Edward Figueroa finished up his solid collegiate debut with his second straight 75 to place in a tie for 15th in the 75-player field. Figueroa was FGCU's low score in two of three rounds, turning in a 70(-2)-75-75/220 scorecard. The Naples native was among the tournament leaders and finished with team-bests in pars (36), par 3 scoring (+1) and par 5 scoring (-3).

Like Figueroa, freshman Jake Sherwin turned in a counting score in each round. Sherwin finished in a tie for 47th overall, opening the tournament with a two-over 74 followed by a 76 in round two and 79 on Tuesday. Fellow newcomer junior Mathias Boesmans also finished with three counting scores of 81-78-77/236.

Monday's low-man senior Jeremy Self tied for 64th overall (82-71-82/235), highlighted by a one-under 71 in the second round. Freshman Jack Hernandez capped the tournament with his best round, a counting score of 77.

FGCU will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 24, when it heads west to play in the St. Mary's Invitational for the third straight year. The 54-hole tournament will begin with 36 holes on Monday and close with 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
