A late surge capped by Sergio Alfaro's 30-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining lifted Lely to a 23-22 victory at Cape Coral Friday night.
A 73-yard touchdown run by DeWarren Mobley brought the Trojans within 22-20 in the fourth quarter. A time consuming drive by Lely put the ball deep in Seahawks territory to set up Alfaro's game-winning field goal.
After the Seahawks failed to convert on fourth down, the Trojans ran out the clock.
The Seahawks' Rayshaan Gayman returned the opening kickoff inside the Lely 10-yard line, but Lely yielded only a few yards. Facing fourth down, the Seahawks elected to go for it, but were stopped at the 3-yard line.
After an exchange of punts, Lely was pinned deep in their own territory. An intentional grounding call in the end zone resulted in a safety, giving the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.
The Seahawks kept Lely on their side of the field the entire first quarter.
Dylan Bontrager's pass completion and Eamon Smart's run put the Seahawks at their own 44-yard line. A botched snap and a penalty resulted in a punt and the Trojans started on their own 49.
A fumble recovery by James Zamor returned possession to the Seahawks, but a screen pass ruled to be a backward pass was recovered by the Trojans at the Seahawks' 32.
A run of 27 yards and a five-yard TD run by Dirogene put the Trojans up 7-2.
After a Lely interception by Chrisnell Germaine, the Trojans marched and scored when QB Zach Gober completed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Lech Pierre. A failed two-point conversion left the score at 13-2 at the half.
The momentum shifted to the Seahawks when Aaron Atkins recovered the ball in the end zone. The Seahawks scored two more touchdowns for a total of three in less than eight minutes during the third quarter.
Atkins' touchdown made the score 13-9 Lely. The Seahawks followed a Lely botched fake punt with a 25-yard pass from Bontrager to Gayman, giving Cape a 16-13 lead.
On the next Seahawk drive, the team effectively ran the ball from deep in their territory to the Lely red zone. The drive was capped by a two-yard touchdown by Smart. The failed PAT resulted in a nine-point lead for the Seahawks, 22-13.
Seahawks coach Larry Gary said, "After the opening kick, we had good opportunities. We just didn't cash in. We've got to play both halves."
The Seahawks play at Cypress Lake next Friday.
