Tritons clash with Gators

September 12, 2012
By JIM LINETTE (jlinette@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

With 20 percent of the football season already behind them, Cape's high school teams turn their attention to their third game Friday night.

Mariner has emerged from its first two games unscathed and rides the confidence of a 2-0 record into Friday's game at Island Coast (1-1). The Tritons will have to try to contain the Gators' new-found passing game launched by senior transfer Kurt Benkert, who quarterbacked Cape High last season.

Benkert led the Seahawks to a 7-5 record and their fifth straight playoff appearance by throwing for more than 2,700 yards and 25 touchdowns with just seven picks.

Another game to watch is Lely (1-1) at Cape Coral (1-1). The Seahawks are smarting from their first regular-season loss to Ida Baker.

Meanwhile, Baker (1-1) travels to Port Charlotte (2-0) on Friday.

North Fort Myers (0-2) goes looking for its first victory at Estero.

Bishop Verot (0-2) hosts high-powered Naples (2-0).
