John A. Firmes, 72, of Cape Coral died Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers. He was born in Bronx, N.Y, Sept. 11, 1939, to Andrew and Evelyn Firmes, now deceased.
He served his country honorably with the U.S. Navy and Army from 1956 to 1960. He moved to Cape Coral in 1970 from Stanford, Conn. He began his career with the Lee County Sheriff's Office where he served his community for 28 years.
After retiring as major he continued serving the community through the Araba Shrine Temple where he served in many offices including past Potentate.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maureen; seven children, Denise (Craig) Knight of Utah, Jan O'Connor, Nancy Justice, Lynda (J.D.) Loethen, Susan (Dave) McBreen, Andrea Firmes, John Jr. (Victoria) Firmes, all of Cape Coral; one sister, Lyn (Bert) Willemse of New York; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be conducted at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Araba Shrine Temple, 2010 Hansen St., Fort Myers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Araba Shriners Transportation Fund 2010 Hansen St., Fort Myers, FL 33901.
