Family who gives to others

receives ultimate gift from

Builders Care Partners

Donors and partners of Builders Care will begin renovations to provide a handicap accessible bathroom for a North Fort Myers family.

Throughout their lives, the Thornton family has given its time and services to help others. Butch Thornton has served in the Vietnam War and his wife, Katherine, spent many years working at the Shriners' organization. Their daughter Tracey, 36, is a nurse and youth ministry leader, and 42-year-old son, Chuck, is a bone marrow donor and avid volunteer.

Now Builders Care will now provide a special gift to the Thornton family to help their son Daniel, 38, left paralyzed following a car accident. With limited mobility, Daniel is not able to complete daily tasks without assistance. Until recently, Daniel's parents have been his primary caretakers. Following their father's diagnosis with lung cancer, other members of the Thornton family have stepped into assist during this difficult time.

To provide wheelchair accessibility in Daniel's bathroom, volunteers will renovate the existing 5-foot by 9-foot bathroom and construct a larger handicap accessible bathroom to include a roll-in shower and grab bars. The project is expected to be completed within seven days.

he project kicks off on Monday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m., with a short rally and the demolition of the bathrooms.

The project will wrap up on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at noon with the unveiling of the new improved bathroom. Building partners, volunteers and the Thornton family will attend.
