Don’t replace Ceitus boat lift

July 21, 2012
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

To the editor:

The lack of leadership displayed by the Lee County Board of County Commissioners has continued far too long. Lead counsel for Lee County has advised the board on numerous occasions (public record) not to pursue litigation against the City of Cape Coral regarding the Ceitus boat lift.

The Ceitus boat lift was removed four years ago and the North Spreader Canal is brimming with marine life. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has recommended permanent removal.

A new lift placed back onto The North Spreader Canal will cause irreparable harm to the mangroves.

Why is the county commission ignoring the advice of their own lawyers and the state at the expense of Lee County taxpayers?

We need new leadership making decisions based on what is economically appropriate for all of Lee County.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Steve "Sonny" Haas, candidate for county commissioner on this issue and he enthusiastically agrees with the City of Cape Coral and the state DEP. The Ceitus boat lift should never be replaced. Property values have continued to rise along the Burnt Store corridor and new homes are being constructed (jobs) as a direct result of the boat lift removal.

Now, they just need to remove the Chiquita boat lock at Cape Harbour Marina.

Put this issue on the ballot and watch in utter amazement as the boat lock disappears along with the incumbent county commissioners.
