Tips lead to arrest in theft at dive center

June 1, 2012
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

On May 30, following extensive media coverage, multiple tips were received by SW Florida Crime Stoppers identifying the subjects in the surveillance photos taken Thursday, May 10, at the ScubaVice Diving Center in Fort Myers involving a reported theft of a dive computer valued at $700.

Detectives working the case prepared a photo lineup and the victim positively identified both of the subjects. Further investigation revealed John Joseph Curran, 37, of 1247 N.W. 19th Terrace, acted alone in the theft. He was located and arrested May 31 and transported to the Lee County Jail.

On May 10, an employee at the store told deputies he noticed an empty space on a display shelf so he began to review surveillance video. The video revealed that while a female customer distracted him, her male counterpart stole the dive computer and concealed it in his pants.

The stolen computer is a Suunto Cobra Dive Computer.
