2 rescued after tree falls onto Fla. apartment

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A woman and her daughter escaped major injury when a tree fell onto their apartment during a thunderstorm.

Gainesville Fire Rescue District Chief Michael Cowart says they were in a second floor unit at the Reserve at Kanapaha apartments when a massive oak tree toppled onto the building Sunday evening.

The Gainesville Sun ( ) reports the pair was trapped in the apartment. Seven people in the apartment downstairs managed to get out without injury.

Firefighters were able to get the girl onto a ladder and help her to the ground. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

No other injuries were reported.
