LMHS to offer flu vaccinations to employees, public

October 18, 2011

Flu vaccines will be available at the Lee Memorial Health System Wellness Centers in Cape Coral and Fort Myers next week for employees and residents.

Lee Memorial Health System Vice President of Health and Wellness Dr. Salvatore Lacagnina said after he had a number of residents asking him if LMHS would be providing flu shots this year, he decided to extend the opportunity to the community because there are enough vaccines available.

"We have the vaccine, so why not allow people to come in and get it," he said. "It is a great way to encourage people to get flu shots."

It is recommended that individuals get their vaccine every year, especially adults.

Lacagnina said the hospital has already seen cases this month.

Although individuals are encouraged to get the flu vaccine as soon as possible, they can still be obtained until the end of the season in January, which sometimes extends to February.

He said people should get the vaccine out of the way, so they do not have to worry about it later.

Although the flu vaccine protects an individual from the season's major viruses, Lacagnina said it may not eliminate the chance of becoming sick from one of the many smaller viruses taking place from something else.

"There is no reason not to get it," he said.

If the flu becomes severe enough, an older individual could end up in the intensive care unit.

The vaccine could cause some side effects. Lacagnina said people will get a low grade fever and become achy because the vaccine is stimulating the immune system to make antibodies against the virus.

Flu vaccines are $25 for those who do not work for the Lee Memorial Health System and free for employees. Payment in cash or by check will be accepted at the time of the vaccination.

The vaccines will be offered at the Wellness Center of Cape Coral, 609 S.E. 13th Court, on Oct. 25 from 7:30-9:30 a.m., and from 1:30-3 p.m. Registration is required by calling 239-573-4800.

It will also be offered at Lee Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness, 2070 Carrell Road, in Fort Myers, on Oct. 27 from 7:30-9:30 a.m., and from 1:30-3 p.m. Registration is required by calling 239-418-2000.
