Escaped bird dies after returning to zoo

MELBOURNE (AP) - A bird that escaped from a zoo along Florida's Space Coast has died after being recaptured.

Officials at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne said Monday that the Southern ground hornbill died late last week after he was returned to the zoo.

The bird, known as BB, was able to escape the Expedition Africa exhibit after his feathers grew out.

The bird stayed nearby and zoo workers fed him by hand.

Last Friday, zoo workers put a sedative in his food and recaptured him. He never came out of sedation and died.

A necropsy was unable to pinpoint the cause of death but zoo officials say the sedation likely contributed to it.
