JACKSONVILLE (AP) - For 50 years, Bill Conroy has been rolling up his sleeves to donate blood.

The first time was in Brooklyn, N.Y., back in 1961. On Monday he reached the 100-gallon milestone at The Blood Alliance's Orange Park center in Jacksonville.

Conroy is the first 100-gallon donor in The Blood Alliance's 69-year history. Valerie Collins, the agency's chief operating officer, says there are "not many around the country."

Conroy, a self-employed house painter who moved to Florida in 1988, stops by for a 90-minute visit every two weeks to donate platelets. He says he donates because it's the right thing to do.
